March for Choice in Dublin On Saturday 29th. September 2012

Some publications claimed that the turnout was low and apparently there is some dispute as to how many people took part in the march with the the Garda Press Office claiming that the march consisted of 500 (this was later updated to 2000) people and the organisers claiming an attendance of about 5,000.

The event was organised to take place before the publication of a report on abortion from a Government appointed expert group which is to be presented to the Minister for Health next month. The report examines the implications of a European Court of Human Rights decision that Ireland failed to implement existing rights to abortion where a mother’s life is at risk.

In December 2010 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Ireland failed to properly implement the constitutional right to abortion where a woman is entitled to one where her life is at risk. The ruling put the issue of abortion back on the political agenda in Ireland (ROI) and seemed likely to force the Government to introduce legislation or official guidelines on access to abortion for women whose lives were at risk. Almost two years later, that legislation is still not in place.
