Pro-Choice Rally in Dublin (International Day Of Action)
On any Saturday O'Connell Street in Dublin is well worth a visit, especially after mid-day. There is usually at least one group of protesters in action and often there will be a t least one counter-protest. You are guaranteed at least one protest outside the GPO which has a certain psychological impact on the Irish people because of its connection with the 1916 Rising and as a result it becomes the focus point of most demonstrations in the capital city. Some protest groups select the Spire as their meeting point.
Today there was a group interested in saving the Bakassi People (Nigeria and Cameroon have disputed the possession of Bakassi for some years) but the main demonstration was a pro-choice march to highlight a woman’s right to safe and legal abortions as part of a global day of action. Much to my surprise there was no real counter-protest in O'Connell Street (there was one lone protester).
The march started at about 2:30 heading to Merrion Square where there were a number of speakers including United Left Alliance TD Clare Daly and Labour senator Ivana Bacik.
I found some of the banners to be a bit confusing as they appeared to be pro-life rather than pro-choice,
Please do not assume that everyone captured in my photographs is actually involved in a protest march.
