equal opportunity candid offender

Just to prove I'm not some malcontent who likes to shoot pictures of homeless people while they sleep and hippies, here's a candid picture of someone on completely on the other side of the spectrum. This is someone who I'm assuming works on Wall Street getting his shoes shined on Broadway in front of Trinity Church. He's giving me the same look as people he could most likely buy and sell.

This photo has been submitted to JPG magazine for their street issue: jpgmag.com/photos/31200.

I really like this one. You really captured the emotion of the man getting his shoes shined. He looks almost guilty.
  • Elisa Bett 8y

    Thank you for the compliment.

He didn't let me take his picture so much as he didn't ask me to delete it after I did. Street photography etiquette, such as it is, means following the law and the law in the United States is someone in a public space understands by nature that they may be photographed. Only if they tell photographer to delete the photo or give some sort of monetary compensation for it, then the law kicks in.

However, were I to sell this photo, I could be sued by the man for making money off of his image unlicensed. That's why all of those "Blind Date" type shows have the faces in the background smudged out.

This is why I don't ever ask for monetary compensation if someone wants to use an image. And the photo that preceeded this one is actually being used by a German company for a set of "dual speed society" (income inequality) playing cards.

love both the shots! that calculating look on his face like he's not sure of what to make of the situation - is priceless!!

Reminds me of a scene in Bonfire of the Vanities....you have captured something very serious and profound. I like his eyes and his stare. You glimpsed something he didn't want to want to show anyone.

kamikaze: I work around the traders on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and they seem to be happy. I think this guy was just unhappy that he couldn't punch me in the face for taking his photo because he was in the middle of his shoeshine. :)
