Pte Oliphant, who had transferred from 11 to 2 Battalion, was reported missing, aged 38, on 18 August 1916 at Longueval during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval.

    William John Oliphant junior was born circa 1878 in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. In 1881 he was living at Milton Brodes, Alves, Morayshire. His parents were William John and Ann and he had a younger sister, Sarah Jane.
