Lateral pothole in a wet West Virginia cave

Flow is toward the viewer, but note that the scallops indicate upstream flow. This is because water flows into the cavity at the downstream end and exits via the upstream end. This is called recirculation and it happens anywhere a stream is passing a deeply concave surface.
