In the Kalimpong area of West Bengal, there has been a decline in traditional rice varieties over the past decade, due to cheaper rice based products in the market and smaller fragmented land-holdings. The aspirations of younger generation are changing with the penetration of markets, some want to grow commercial crops such as flowers. In reaction to this, serious efforts are being made by the older generation and adults towards revival of their cultural practices and traditional products.
