Tunnel to Towers Run
In silver bunker suits, Randolph Air Force Base Firefighters run during the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run San Antonio 5K at Alamo Plaza. The top runner in each division will compete in the Tunnel to Towers run in New York City. Siller was a firefighter with the Brooklyn's Squad 1 and died during the attack on the Twin Towers.
On Sunday September 9th, firefighters, police officers, military service members and others from Bexar County took part in a regional race of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to the Towers 5k Run/Walk in New York.
Roughly 50 area firefighters and San Antonio police officers ran with 30 to 60 pounds of added weight from their fire gear or police uniforms and bulletproof vests.
Beginning and ending at Alamo Plaza, participants ran past two San Antonio fire ladder trucks hoisting a large American flag. Beneath it, members of the Texas Army National Guard stood watch over a piece of the World Trade Center.
The winning firefighter, Marcos Muñoz, and police officer, John Seaton, will represent San Antonio in New York on Sept. 30, when the run retraces Siller's last journey.
The annual event is put on by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to the Towers Foundation.
