Sea Turtle Fence Friday

Taken at the Tortugranja (translated: turtle farm) in Isla Mujeres. This is the turtles' breeding grounds and the hatchery places wire cages around their eggs to protect against predators.

Sea turtles are endangered and are killed throughout Latin America for their eggs and meat, which is considered a delicacy. Three species of sea turtle lay eggs in the sand along the Isla Mujeres' western shore. This turtle farm is an attempt to protect them - one tortugita (little turtle) at a time.
