IBM scientist Bonolo Mathibela and her colleagues at IBM Research in South Africa have developed a traffic optimization recommendation tool which can help city officials dispatch traffic volunteers, known locally as pointsmen, to the intersections where they are most urgently needed due to unreliable traffic light infrastructure.
