Black Background Portraits - 4
Some portraits of friends I cajoled them into at a dinner party a couple of weeks ago. This was an exercise in portrature with a pure black background, using short lighting.
Background is fabric store black velvet, which is fantastic for sucking up light into nothingness.
Strobist: Short lighting setup:
- The key light was a 580EXII inside a 28" softbox, behind and to the right of the subject, facing me slightly (approximately 120 degree angle from my position, so that it lit the side of the face facing away from the camera, with little or no spill onto the left side of the face)
- Hair light was a bare 430EX about 2 feet above the subject, from behind left of the subject
- Fill light was a 580EXII from nearly on axis just to the left of me, and a bit below camera level. Exposure was stopped down to about 1.5 stops below the key. Most of the shots in this series (this one included), the fill was through a white umbrella, in one or two the fill light was bare.
