The Bishop Rock lighthouse, Isles of Scilly, England

Recently seen on the BBC 1 Idents. Th Bishop Rock lighthouse stands at the extreme south west of the British Isles. The current tower was completed in 1887 and is the third to stand on the rock. The first cast iron tower washed away and the second granite tower had to be encased in another layer of masonry and its height raised as it was showing signs of stress due to the huge force of the seas in that area.

A helideck was added in the 1970s and the lighthouse was automated in 1992. The heavy gunmetal entrance doors about a third of the way up the tower had to be replaced shortly afterwards when a wave demolished them.

The current tower is the tallest lighthouse in Britain. The Bishop Rock is listed in the Guiness Book of Records as being the smallest 'island' in the world with a building on top of it (although what makes its different from a rock I'm not very sure!).
