Sunset Lightning

Looking west over the Sonoran Desert National Monument lands from Vekol Road, north of I-8.

Nikon D80 fired with homebrewed Arduino-based trigger - it measures ambient infrared and triggers the shutter when a sudden increase in IR is detected.

Custom white balance set from the lightning stroke itself.

This strike occurred while I was chatting with the highway patrolman who stopped to make sure we were A) not having car trouble and B) not smuggling anything or anyone. The area south of I-8 along the Vekol Wash is well-known as a trouble area. We were north of I-8. In all of my interactions with the Arizona Highway Patrol they have been cheerful, friendly, and professional.
