Competency-based education

Representatives of area education agencies, education colleges, about a dozen school districts and the Iowa Department of Education met in Des Moines for an ongoing professional learning opportunity about competency-based education. Known as the Iowa Competency-Based Education Collaborative, the group comes together monthly to learn how to effectively use competency-based education in the classroom. Competency-based education, one of many elements within the state’s arsenal to ensure world-class education in Iowa, focuses on students earning credit and advancing to the next level based on mastery of specific skills or standards. This is in lieu of completing course work over a specific period of time.
