Sixteen people are being trained at the Iowa Department of Education in the Check and Connect program designed to foster one-on-one communication between educators and students with behavioral issues. The group, a part of the Department’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports project, will soon train schools on the technique. The goal of Check and Connect is to establish a mentor relationship in order to re-engage students in their learning environments. Without such supports, students with behavioral issues frequently fall behind academically.
