RIP Godzuki. You were my best four legged friend. I'm glad you were recently groomed and went out with a clean butt. You will be missed like crazy!

Godzuki was not sick, that we know of. I mean, he was fat, but not " too big" for a Maine Coon. He was considered "healthy". He had seen the vet in less than a year and had checked out fine.

At around 2:15 today, while I was changing Lulu's diaper, I heard him make a cry downstairs -- the same cry he makes before he throws up a hairball. Nothing different or dramatic. Maybe a little longer than usual, but nothing extraordinary. I did notice however that he did not make the upchuck noises he normally does after the cry (trying to rid of his hairball), but I didn't think anything of it as he sometimes makes the cries just walking around the house or chasing flying insects.

After I changed Lulu I brought her down the stairs where I saw Godzuki laying on the ground, still as ever. Anyone who knows Godzu, knows the position he was laying in was totally unnatural. With Lulu in my arms I ran to him and put my hand on him. His body was still warm but his eyes were glazed over and his tongue was sticking out of his mouth. No signs of anything weird. He had tried to climb under our Eames table to rest and his head was on the foot of the table.

I called my Uncle Mike who rushed over and confirmed for me what I already knew. Uncle Mike put Godzuki in a box for me and I picked up Silvio and we took him to our vet where they too confirmed that he had changed cosmic addresses. He was DOA. The vet checked his throat and there was nothing caught inside (to rule out choking). His cause of death is unknown. The vet said it was rare for a seemingly healthy cat to die of a heart attack. But we just don't know what happened.

Just this morning, Godzuki was behaving as though it was any other day. I actually shot footage of Lulu playing with him in the bedroom. He was totally normal. So it was a surprise to all of us. He was young for a cat. About nine years old. We're in total shock. But it's hard to be sad when you think about Godzuki, the best dog-cat in the world!

p.s. I'm so glad so many of you got a chance to meet him. He really loved attention and company and you always gave him a lot of that. THANKS!

UPDATE: It seems as though some Maine Coons suffer from "feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most common heart disease seen in cats, whether pure bred or not. In Maine Coons, it is thought to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Middle-aged to older cats as well as males are thought to be predisposed to the disease. HCM is a progressive disease and can result in heart failure, paralysis of the hind legs due to clot embolization originating in the heart, and sudden death."

hello- I was "introduced" to your kitty only yesterday by a former colleague who sent me a link to him. I was immediately hooked on his big handsome face and the wonderful photos of his lion cuts, and all that. I then heard today he had passed, and wanted to pay my respects. Thanks for sharing the photos of him.

Totally honored to have been able to meet the little (big) guy — even if just for a few minutes last week!
