Behind the Scenes: "A Clash of Empires"
Before an exhibition opens to the public at The Huntington, many months—even years—of preparatory work has to be done. A subject or theme is chosen and researched by the curator, relevant materials from the collections are selected for display, the preservation staff reviews the condition of rare items and addresses any conservation needs, and the exhibition designer plans the look and layout of the show. One important step in the process is the preparation of works for installation. In the final weeks before the opening of the exhibition “A Clash of Empires: The Seven Years’ War and British America” (on view Apr. 24 through July 26, 2010, in the Library Exhibition Hall), we went behind the scenes for a look at that process.
