Asakusa Views 6/10 - 正門 The Gate
Taken at Asakusa, Tokyo. This image is available to license from Getty Images
Here is the sixth shot in my Asakusa Views series, the giant lanterns that hang from Hōzōmon 宝蔵門 the Treasure House Gate. Their combined weight is around 2.4 metric tonnes, with the main red lantern or chōchin being a commemorative donation from the people of Funamachi 小舟町.
I've taken several pictures at this site over the years, usually on the angle as there are so many people around and never been completely happy with the results. This one though I like as I could get the head-on shot looking through to the courtyard without any folks about.
So far my series has largely concentrated on the typical tourist shots in and around Asakusa's main temple, and so for the next few I'll go elsewhere in the area and hopefully throw in some daytime pics too.
