New desk (work in progress)

Finally got around to setting up my new workspace, still a bit rough and ready around the edges but getting there now.

This was meant to be just a cheap temporary desk (from IKEA) but I actually quite like it so might end up keeping it!

Still to do: Lighting and cable management, as well as a bit of organising the final position of the screens.

But there are alot of nice small amps also i guess, you might be on to something :)

nice set...anyway, you could think about harman kardon diamond- bit expensive, but worth all the money. Jeck them in to the airport express and move them where do you like and enjoy the sound. Move phones on the right side from macbook pro, remove iPad and Ultra HD from desk, find some light, and you are complete...as far as I would do. :) cheers

What can I say....... It is FANTASTIC.... Man u'r my hero !!!!!!!

Good call on the Airport Express idea, i didn't think of that but it means I don't need to have more stuff on the desk. I do have a little room on the unit next to the desk where I could fit an amp if I did want to go down that route.

As for lighting I am not sure what to do with that, there is a very large window to the left of the desk about 2ft back from the front edge that provides plenty of light in the room, and the displays are all very reflective so I really need something that will provide an equal light when working at night. Would be interested to hear opinions on lighting behind the screens?

I do quite like these Morduant Short Aviano 1s, could fit them in with a small amp and set-up with airport express or my Apple TV for no more wires?
  • Igor Stefanovski 5y

Couldn't hear the sound of Morduant yet, but bet they are good. If you using those kind of speakers with one more device like amp, then you are loosing your space. solution could be with active speakers?! About the light behind your back....hm...not sure it is good during the day, but I don't know if you could rotate the desk or something like that....
  • John Erlandsen 5y

I havent heard thoose speakers either, but about the amp options i know fatman makes a series of small tube amps thats very cool or alternativly scansonic makes amp suitable for a desk... just a disclaimer i have never listened to either of thoose, i just know they exist :)

I also have a light bedind my all my screens it makes the light from a screen seem less intrusive, i usually solve this by using a simple LED tube to the back of the desk or screen, its energy efficient and it doesnt get warm :)

I have an IKEA led light strip that I used to have behind my screens on my previous desk, think I might bring it back and give it another try - really noticing the lack of light coming from behind the screens. Not sure why it works but it just does, seems to make working at the screen less harsh? Philips use it on the backs of their TV's so there must be some science to it somewhere!

Also - anyone got any ideas for a mousemat to use with my Magic Mouse that won't raise it too high off the desk but also is made of something that will look good but is also very durable? I don't want to damage the white desk with the mouse!

I use a steelseries aluminium one, but its extra large and black, not sure how that would look on youre desk, you can see it in my picture

. I just love the way it feels like a macbook or something...tho it can be a bit cold on winter mornings its heats up fast :)

Steelseries used to make a white glass one, not sure if they make it anymore :)
  • Jon Hume 5y

I had a look at SteelSeries - no sign of anything in their current range that would match in with my setup :( Although their stuff did look very cool.

Started looking around and found this one on Geek Stuff 4 U

Why is it slanted? If i was going for a wooden mousepad, i think i would have tried to make one myself :)
  • Jon Hume 5y

Still only researching to see what was out there, no inspiration discovered as yet - and of course a wooden one would be better hand made!
  • Jon Hume 5y

Think I might get this one ..

  • Igor Stefanovski 5y

    definitely... looks pretty good. :)

Thats a great looking mouse pad, whats the deal with the 2 layers? what kinda materials and such is it made from? Do you have some kinda link to the manufacturer?

Nah, I'd buy no mousepad. It spoils it all.

My Magic Mouse works like a charm on the desk's surface.

[ That Alupad looks sexy, I must admit, though... ]

OK - Thanks for all of your comments and ideas, here is the finished desk:
