Mersey, 18.01.2007, at bursting point

I've never seen it so high, the width of the river wouldn't even fit in the viewfinder! Last night and today saw lots of very high winds and rain, with hundreds of planes cancelled, trains cancelled or restricted to 50mph, shuttle services laid on, roads blocked, walls toppled, lorries overturned, motorists advised, sheds collapsed, power cut, trees and branches felled, roofs damaged, ports closed, cars stuck in snow, mariners rescued, bridges closed, and people killed.
