Child drawing picture
Here are some pictures that were taken at the Mercy Center which was set up and run by Father Joe Maier & Sister Maria Chantavarodom.
Father Joe first arrived in Thailand in 1967, he also for a brief stint preached in Isan (the northeastern region of Thailand) & with the Hmong tribes in Laos before eventually finally settling into the slums of Bangkok. Where he lived and gave services above a slaughterhouse in Khlong Toei.
Sister Maria Chantavarodom although born in Macau, was raised in Thailand where she became a founding member for The Daughters of the Queenship of Mary the Immaculate. She has led the order for the past 25 years as its mother superior.
Father Joe & Sister Maria met and joined forces in Khlong Toey, Bangkok back in 1973. Working with society's poorest & most vulnerable by opening up nurseries/learning centres in the most deprived areas before eventually establishing 'The Human Development Foundation'.
Here they offer education & welfare for the poorest families in Bangkok, provide support for children/families affected by Aid's/HIV. they also do great work with the Sea Gypsies in the South and much, much, more.
Father Joe & Sister Maria have helped educate over 50.000 children since starting the foundation.
