once marshland, drained centuries ago for agriculture, this area contains a non-renewable layer of peat six feet thick, which is excavated and sold, leaving behind holes that fill with water.

 

in response to this environmental destruction, reeds have been planted in some of the pools to restore a more natural habitat.
