    It's called varicose veins. It happens when the valves in your veins fail to keep the blood from flowing backward against gravity and the veins become enlarged from blood pooling. Things that will increase the risk of getting varicose veins are genetics, obesity, pregnancy, taking hormones, leg injury, standing for prolonged periods of time, and old age. I'm assuming it happens in cyclist racers because of prolonged strenuous leg exertion. The average cyclists doesn't have to worry about it. In fact regular exercise that stimulates circulation can help prevent it. I've heard that having a cooling down period after pounding on your bike can help prevent this as it keeps blood flowing instead of pooling after you collapsing.
