San Giorgio Maggiore
I stayed one night in Venice last September. My hotel was close to Piazza San Marco and I used the opportunity to get up early in the morning to photograph. It was a different Venice, almost abandoned with no tourists except a few photographers getting up early in the morning... (I was not alone). Some workers were cleaning the streets. A wonderful time of day to experience the city.
The island of San Giorgio Maggiore is a famous landmark seen from the Piazza San Marco. The church was finished in 1580 and ever since people must have been intrigued by the classic beauty of this architecture. But it should take hundreds of years before a photo like this could be captured. Since those first photographic captures the same view have been photographed millions of times by all the visitors to this living museum.
I decided to go for a classic BW treatment of the photo. So this is a homage to the old school of photography and a reminder of how the first photos of San Giorgio Maggiore may have looked like.
