San Giorgio Maggiore

I stayed one night in Venice last September. My hotel was close to Piazza San Marco and I used the opportunity to get up early in the morning to photograph. It was a different Venice, almost abandoned with no tourists except a few photographers getting up early in the morning... (I was not alone). Some workers were cleaning the streets. A wonderful time of day to experience the city.

The island of San Giorgio Maggiore is a famous landmark seen from the Piazza San Marco. The church was finished in 1580 and ever since people must have been intrigued by the classic beauty of this architecture. But it should take hundreds of years before a photo like this could be captured. Since those first photographic captures the same view have been photographed millions of times by all the visitors to this living museum.

I decided to go for a classic BW treatment of the photo. So this is a homage to the old school of photography and a reminder of how the first photos of San Giorgio Maggiore may have looked like.

      Technical Execution: 7 = Good
I dont think bw conversion is done correctly. Grey is dominant, I think u should try to do better conversion by channels, and to improve the blacks and whites. There are details in the building but i think is oversharpened in the area of birds.
Maybe a little bit of lens correction as vignetting would fit good into this composition.

      Visual Composition: 9 = Excellent
Very nice organisation of elements. Perspective and geometry are perfectly solved. Maybe a little bit to central at the point of the main object in the building. But lines are leading you directly to the most dinamic part of the picture - the birds. So composition is very correct.
      I like the panoramic crop.

Artistic Value and Creativity: 8 = Very Good
Nice concept and idea. B/W is siutable for this kind of composition, and definitely is a piece of art. You give it yours artistic stamp on this classical architecture, so made it unique one.

Personal Impact: 8 = Very Good
I feel like im somewhere there in the picture. I think with the birds crew :)
Would like to visit this location one more and to see it in different mood like this, than the oridinary coloured one.

Total Impression: 8 = Very Good
