Walking the Path

I try to remind myself to keep my eyes out from among my shoelaces. There is no use. I will be as blind to the next bump as I was to the last. The path ahead of me will give the

rigid clarity of direction I need right now.

I must go.

My jaw clenches with the recall, as my mind recoils at the memory. My teeth begin to grind against each other like two angry lovers, attempting to extract a twisted pleasure from an infliction of pain.

I must go.

The next curve will take me far enough away. Soon, even the most piercing gaze will fall short of remembering. Just keep your head up, your eyes on the next curve. An undiscovered country lies around that corner; a new adventure with a new invention of character.

You must go.
