The purple gallinule is a member of the rail family that lives in the reeds. It uses its long toes to spread its weight so that it can walk on the lily pads. Gallinules are mainly vegetarians but eat small animal life they can find. Here one carefully lifts the edge of a lily pad and holds it over to see what delicacies might be underneath.
