I've wanted to make Hopper's "Nighthawks" for the longest time; feels good to finally cross that one off.

I don't know how accurate you were trying to be in regards to the original, so most likely a lot of what I'm going to say isn't going to be relevant, but in the off chance you were trying to recreate the original, I've got a few suggestions I hope you'll find helpful:

-It looks like this has more shadows than the original, especially the background shadows. The one that catches my attention the most is the hard edge of the building's actual shadow on the background buildings. That definitely isn't in the original piece. As I don't know much in the ways of lighting, I don't know an exact way that you could lessen the shadows in the background and maintain the intensity of the ones in the foreground.

-The building itself doesn't seem to have many curves. In the original piece, the exterior is curved, and the bar on the interior is curved as well. It also seems like in the original, the road and the corner are curved too, like it's sitting on the corner of a city block. I think that if you included more curves in the MOC it would look better as well as looking more accurate in regards to the original.

-The framing of the photo seems off. It looks like the building is set too far back in the frame. A lot of the focus is dedicated to the bland and boring sidewalk (which looks to be a really wide sidewalk, I might add). In the original, the corner of the main building and the lower right corner of the frame come incredibly close to lining up.

So, hope that's useful to you, and if not, feel free to ignore it. I wouldn't really mind.

This was on my "one day I'll build it" list.

This really is the first LEGO Nighthawks in my mind. All the ones I've seen so far don't come close.

The lighting really makes the model what it is. I think that's where you struck it out of the park; lighting.

Hopper has some other paintings that would be alot of fun to do in Lego...

    Instantly recognizable! Well done sir!

^^^ I was trying to make it as close as I could make it, but I knew it wouldn't be perfect. The bar actually is curved at the corner; it's just such a flat angle you can't really tell. As for the non-curved sidewalk and exterior, I just didn't have the pieces (dark green arches, BARELY curved gray arches) to make it exact. And the lighting just can't be perfect, because I work with one single, stubborn lamp and its abilities are pretty limited. But despite the discrepancies, I look at what I ended up with and I'm satisfied.

^^ I wouldn't be surprised if it was on everybody's "one day I'll build it" list. It's an awesome piece of work; I'd love to continue the Hopper binge.

^ The highest honor one can bestow is definitely "instantly recognizable". Thanks!

My art teacher gave my English teacher the old LEGO Nighthawks previously linked in here, but man, this one is a lot better. Nice one!

I can't really express how charming this is. You nailed it.

I'd love to get a print of this framed and up on my wall. This is fantastic.

^ I've actually been thinking of putting these Nighthawks versions up for sale, so stay tuned.
  • Drizdar 5y

Wow. This looks almost exactly like the painting. Great job =)
  • Alex Eylar 5y

There: the original and the space version are up. The zombies version I obviously can't sell because it's not my idea, but these are now for sale either here or here.

one of my favourite modern paintings: are you ever going to do the Hopper with the splash ?
  • Alex Eylar 5y

@fgr62 Probably not; that splash looks difficult. But one day I'd like to try some more Hopper, when the inspiration strikes.

I might have to order a print of this for my LEGO room. It is really well done and so classic.
