grassy narrows

Grassy Narrows, Ontario. Currently the longest standing blockade in Canadian history. Initiated on December 3, 2002, to stop the clear cutting of the surrounding forests by the world's largest manufacturer of newsprint, Abitibi Consolidated. As well as being forced to take action against clear cutting practices, the Ojibway Nation has had to deal with effects of environmental racism in the form of mercury poisoning. The life threatening neurological disorder known as Minimata disease causes tremors, lack of motor control, and seizures.
