St Syrians Coptic monastery – situated North west of Cairo in the Nile Delta at Wadi el-Natrun (Natron valley)
The region was and remains one of the most sacred regions in Christianity. Between the 4th and 7th century A.D., the area witnessed hundreds of thousands of people from around the world join the hundreds of monasteries of the Nitrian Desert, centred on Nitria, Kellia and Scetis (Wadi El Natrun).

These photographs are a selection taken in 2008 and include part of the Deir el-Surian conservation project
