C and H

freehand playroom mural, donated to the Reynold's Home, a shelter for women and children

i've always been a HUGE fan of this comic strip. Working on this mural, staring at every minute detail, i gained a greater appreciation for watterson's beautiful work. i tried to respect the original works as much as possible, giving my full attention to even the smallest detail and trying to get the colors just right. attempting to recreate the look of watercolors using only latex paint proved to be quite difficult.

i hope i did 'em justice

for some reason, i don't think this photo truly shows people how big this mural actually is. i think it was something like 18 feet wide by 10 feet high

    Beautiful work sir.
I am starting a movement aimed at keeping Calvin and Hobbes from being produced for profit by corporate entities-- --The thinking being that eventually when Watterson passes away, his estate will get sold to the highest bidder, and then the merchandising "machine" that is corporate greed will kick in and then lawyers and corporations who had nothing to do with Bill Watterson nor his intentions of not selling out, will try to make a fortune from my generations' nostalgia.
The goal of course is to turn Calvin and Hobbes into "3rd party poison" or in other words ---NOTHING--nothing but what it was meant to be. Sending the message from our generation that-- "Calvin and Hobbes is NOT for sale."--
I hope you will join us in spreading the word. --

Just finishing a simpler mural for my own nursery, and impressed with this execution of design.
Would like to know how you did it, paint (oil, latex, etc.), did you mix your own color (I didn't was scared i would ruin the paint, Latex), what kind of tools and brushes were used (HD had brushes but none that really work for detail, art store brushes too fine, ended up cutting sponge to size).

all my paint is high quality latex based paint. i like using Purdy brushes. 1" and 2.5", as well as a #10 round brush for small detail. i only buy the basic colors i'll need, the rest are mixed by me on site.
