This track reminds me of thick black vinyl LP's on the NEMS label, £2.25 bargains at the Virgin Megastore on Manchester's Market Street, when I was still at school. Cracking albums anyway.
'Sweet Leaf' is a song by Black Sabbath from their 1971 album Master of Reality. The song, a hymn to recreational cannabis use. Apparently, it got its title from a packet of cigarettes bassist Geezer Butler bought in Dublin that claimed the tobacco was "the sweet leaf." ("Sweetleaf" is also an English name for stevia.) The song begins with a tape loop of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing.
I recently read the Ozzy Osbourne biography unintentionally by picking up a used book on holiday and I was instantly hooked. Could not put it down. Some of the Sabs albums have been out since.
Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Aston, Birmingham UK in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years.
Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and the often apocalyptic prophesies of the horrors of war. Mostly of course it was good headbanging stuff!
If this floats your boat, check out some of these other banging tracks, all to be found on the various Black Sabbath compilations out there:
