Just before the Start, 1912, Indianapolis, Indiana section
1912 postcard view of the pre-race ceremonies at the Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was in 1912 and only 24 cars started the race that year. A Stutz served as the pace car. The race was won by Joe Dawson (car number 8). His winning time was 6:21:06.
The cars were at the starting line and the Press Stand was at the right edge of this scene. The pagoda wouldn’t be built until the following year, replacing the Press Stand and the Judges’ Stand at the starting line. Flags were flying above the grandstand along the west side of the straightaway.
From a private collection.
