We live next door to the school, so on Sundays and bank hols, the kids can ride their bikes up and down. Didi's stabilisers were a bit low, she was getting wheel spin on some bumpy bits, so I raised them slightly, which caused her to totally wimp out.
The amazing day CJ rode her bike for the first time without stabilisers will stay with me forever, I think. One day she can't do it and won't try, the next, I give her a push and she's off, like she'd been doing it all her life. And I think when she realised that falling off (on the grass at first) didn't hurt that much, she was much more confident.
That's a key lesson in life, I believe. The thing you fear the most turns out to be not half so bad as the fear itself, as the great man once said.
