Nijland delivery tricycle
Here's the Nijland delivery tricycle that Clevercycles carries. They imported two, one of which is currently owned by Rick of Café Vélo. This one, pictured, lives at the shop until some lucky person becomes its new owner. Meanwhile, I spent a little time last week putting it through its paces.
The trike has a 1:1 fixed-gear drivetrain, a roller brake to the rear and leaf-spring suspension under the box. It rides like a 1972 Oldsmobile in pristine condition, but a lot quieter and less smelly. I expected it to be difficult to pedal, or hard to control. It was not. It was like flying, very very slowly. Absolutely beautiful.
I took the opportunity to go to Burgerville and pick up milkshakes for the crew at Clevercycles. When I got to the B-ville I realized the trike wouldn't fit on the sidewalk, so I just parked it in a parking space. When I left the restaurant, I simply pedaled backward and reversed out of the parking space. Now, I love just about everything about this machine. But backing up and steering out of a parking space made me get all weepy. I am tearing up just thinking about it. It was such a beautiful thing. I wish I had an excuse to own one of these, because I surely would. It makes our Christiania feel like a pursuit bike.
