There is not really an English word available for what we call "Alm" in Austria. The cows are seasonally migrated between valley and high pastures It is a traditional practice that has shaped much of the landscape in the Alps, as without it, most areas below 2000 m would be forests. While tourism and industry contribute today much to Alpine economy, seasonal migration to high pastures is still practiced in the alpine regions of Bavaria, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland, except in their most frequented tourist centers.
Most Austrian Alpine pastures are below 2,400 m, all are below 2,800 m. The Alm in the picture is on approx. 1600 meters above sea level.
But there is not much time left - the farmers relocate to their farms in the valley in mid of September already, since it becomes colder and the first snow may come in the mountains very soon....
