HOK Chicago Office: LEED-CI Platinum

Chicago, Illinois

Having outgrown its office space and facing lease expiration, HOK Chicago enlisted the help of its own designers to assist with its relocation to a new office space in Chicago’s CNA building.

Design of the 27,000-square-foot space, which is expected to become one of the only LEED CI Platinum Certified environments in Chicago, was inspired by the concepts of “collaborate,” “connect,” and “contrast.” The new office environment provides workspace for 140 employees within a 98% open floor plan, which allows for the mobility of teams and provides maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Extensive conferencing space, a large café and informal teaming/project display areas throughout the space further facilitate employee interaction.

Bold, brand-related colors, such as red, purple, orange, green and yellow, are used throughout the office in both solid and textured patterns and as identifiers for informal spaces. Distinctly different materials, such as reclaimed teak paneling and aluminum flooring, were used side-by-side to provide further contrast and design interest.

Many sustainable design features were incorporated into the design, including use of salvaged materials; natural daylighting; cradle to cradle certification for workstations; and water use reduction through retrofitting or replacement of existing fixtures.
