Lois Update! [Corpse Flower]

Lois is currently nearing the end of a new vegetative phase, in which the plant develops a talk, tree-like leaf that photosynthesizes to collect as much energy from the sun as possible. This will be stored as additional mass in the corm (the bulb-like structure from which Lois' famed inflorescence also emerges).

This stage started in November when she began to form her leaf, which fully emerged on Nov. 29, 2010. The leaf has reached a maximum height of 68 inches. This picture was taken on April 28, 2011.

Once this vegetative stage ends, Lois will again go dormant - to re-emerge as a new leaf or a new inflorescence when she is ready.
