Western Auto

    Newer Older

The old Western Auto in downtown Hackleburg, Alabama fared much better in the 4/27/11 tornadoes than the building to the left, which was nothing but rubble.

Amazing. Tornados can be fickle as they destroy.

The sign in front of the Western Auto, does that denote that it was searched for injuries and fatalities and if any were found?

Yes, but I don't know how to decode it. And honestly don't want to. These were spray painted everywhere.

It's just amazing what they hit and what they don't. One of our friends had a barn that the tornado missed, yet it skipped over the pond beside it. The next day the entire area was littered with dead fish....literally sucked out of the pond!

I saw those same symbols in Shoal Creek Valley....awful.

Your series from Hackleburg are print media award-worthy shots. I'm a former life-long Californian, new to the south, so this has been quite an experience for me -- for all of us here in Northern Alabama.

Thanks so much, . Seeing the destruction in Hackleburg and Phil Campbell, AL was utterly unreal. There just are no words to describe whole communities that simply don't exist anymore.

Wow. Heather. Thanks for sharing these important documentary photos. My family lives in west Georgia near the Alabama line (Grantville, GA) while I work in N.C. I go home to be with them on the weekends and these photos have convinced me that this weekend we need to drive into Alabama and see what we can do to help.
