OUT in the OPEN: Ikea Imagery: The Family
Surely, everyone is familiar with Ikea, the Swedish company that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture and other home accessories.
Quite awhile back, the company did a series of television commercials featuring diverse (real) couples, gay and straight. The image above is one of those couples from the commercials.
Cheers to Ikea for momentarily breaking a less than celebratory trend in gay commercial imagery to show an African descent man and Asian man same-sex couple with their daughter and pet dog.
To understand the importance and history this image made at the time of its reveal, one must understand how it went against the ubiquitous and forever popular Caucasian gay couple and the Caucasian guy and his lover of color in commercial media imagery that persisted then and continues to exist with dubious popular acceptance now.
In advertising media overall, barring a very few standout same-sex images having
noting to do with HIV/AIDS medication, there still is a reluctance to show a same-sex couple where both partners are either of African descent or Asian descent.
