Battle of the Titans

A RARE image!!! This is only VERY rarely observed in the 'wild' and even less frequently photographed...

Two goannas (Lace monitors, Varanus varius) engaged in domination behaviour ('combat') for dominance and (possibly) territory and quite oblivious to the world around them. For the rest of the photo series see here.

Each of the animals would have measured close to if not over four feet.

From a photographer's point of view: In the usual tiresome way of wildlife in nature they are battling in shade against a mottled couldn't be helped. I was not going to get out of the car, as I would have scared them off..or worse... and my camera at the time, a Fuji FinePix S7000 was at the limits of capability

Image: Fujifilm FinePix S7000

ISO 160; 1/240sec; f4.5

(according EXIF on full frame image)

Postprocessing: sharpening and cropping on Photoshop.
