Gruyères in Switzerland

Château de Gruyères in Fribourg in western Switzerland. The wall-enclosed medieval town is a very popular day-trip destination.

The HR Giger Museum in Gruyères, Fribourg, Switzerland, has the largest permanent collection of works by the Swiss surrealist artist Hansruedi Giger. He famously created the monsters for the movie Alien. Adjacent to the Gigermuseum is the Tibet Museum with a remarkable collection of Buddhist artworks from Tibet and other Himalayan regions. Both museums offer an alternative to the medieval Château du Gruyères, which is the top standard sight in this small wall-enclosed Alpine town.

Medieval Gruyères is an easy drive from the Lake Geneva region or Bonn and can also easily be reached by public transportation. Other popular sights in the region include the Gruyère Show Cheese Making Dairy, the Cailler chocolate factory in Broc and the hot-water baths at the Bains de la Gruyère in Charmey.
