Murphy Away Projects: MAP Oral History in the Pacific Northwest
Letter Cloud exhibit – hanging from the ceiling are folded, white pieces of paper. On each piece of paper is a letter from an immigrant, “hand written carriers of hope and dreams and daily life and connection to and from family and friends.” Accompanying the hallway of letters is a soft audio recording of the letters being read in English and Japanese. This exhibit also uses audio to stimulate the sounds of wind and waves.
“The view of the sky recalls the expanse of ocean crossed to reach this new home, an oceanic crossing that must now be made by words of love an longing sent to those back home” – Erin Shie Palmer and Susie Kozawa (2008).
