Cinnabar Moth - Tyria jacobaeae

This image was taken in the early morning at Fry's Hill, Axbridge in Somerset on the 26th August 2012.

These caterpillars have been a fairly rare sight on the mendips in the last few years, I suspect this maybe down to a lot of the Ragworts they feed on being pulled up as the plants are toxic to livestock, however I found quite a lot of Ragworts at this site and just this one solitary caterpillar. I don't think it will win any prizes in the caterpillar beauty contest either!
