Adder - Vipera berus (male)

image taken at Blackmoor Reserve in Somerset on the 29th March 2011.

The final Adder shot from my reptile series and my personal favourite, found by the team I met, who were conducting a survey of snakes on the reserve.

A male adder in a classic defensive posture, actually he was quite well behaved, which you would never believe from the posture.

It won't be long before this one sheds its skin and will have its breeding colours, as can be seen in the milky patches in the eye.

This guy did not stay very still and was moving around whilst I took this shot even though its head is perfectly still.

Thanks again to the team who gave me the opportunity to take this image.
