Woman with child collecting water
A woman carrying her child on her back is collecting water at a source in the bush, close to the school of Benah2, 19 May 2008. In CAR it is estimated that access to safe drinking water stands at 31.5% for population in urban areas and 26.0% in rural areas. About 75% of the population does not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. The lack of access to safe water and sanitation has many serious repercussions on children – particularly girls –, who are denied their right to education because they are busy fetching water or are deterred by the lack of separate and decent sanitation facilities in schools. Women are forced to spend large parts of their day fetching water. Poor farmers and wage earners are less productive due to illness, and national economies suffer.
