Dying from Malaria

    Newer Older

A pregnant woman, with her relative keeping her breathing, is dying of a malaria crisis at the Birao’s hospital, northeastern CAR. She will die seven hours later, leaving eight children behind. The hospital, staffed with two employees and looted during attacks a few months ago, had no drugs or surgical and delivery facilities. UNICEF now helps to maintain the cold chain and to run the vaccination campaigns, offering vaccines, vitamin A, essential drugs and mosquito nets to the communities.

This is very sad. It must have been heartbreaking to watch this woman and her baby die from a curable disease like this.
I was unlucky enough to suffer a very serious bout of (cerebral) malaria while I was in Ghana. It was the most physically and mentally painfull experience I have ever had. Beyond description. But I was lucky I was eventually taken to hospital where I was able to be treated.
Knowing the pure pain involved, even with proper treatment, it brings tears to my eyes trying to imagine what this poor woman went through before finally passing.

Very striking photo. I am wondering if it would be possible to use this on a personal website?

Sadly, there is no vaccine for malaria yet, though a promising candidate was reported in 2013.
