Columbia, SC, Elmwood Avenue
Logan School, Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, SC. Photo taken 5 March 2011.
An example of institutional architecture, sometimes called institutional gothic, which is associated with educational buildings constructed at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This elementary school was designed to anchor what would be known as a streetcar suburb located north of downtown Columbia. The recent renovation of this school not only preserves the historic visual anchor to the Elmwood Park neighborhood, it also extends the opportunity for another generation to enjoy an academic environment that is much richer in finish materials than is typically found in contemporary school construction today.
