Empire of the Sun, Vol. 4

Another view looking south from Top of the Rock, the newly reopened observation deck atop the GE Building at Rockefeller Center.

If you look really closely, all the way at the back, you can see the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (at left), and the Statute of Liberty (a bit to the right of center). I recommend viewing this at the largest sizes, to better discern those iconic objects.

The V-N Bridge, opened in 1964, links the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn, and boasts the second-largest suspension span in the world, with a distance of 4,260 feet between its towers. That distance is so great that its designers needed to compensate for the curvature of the Earth. Thus, the distance between its towers is about 1 1/2 inches greater at their tops than at their bases.
