Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, Hawaii

Our first full day on the island was indeed a very full day. We woke at 4:30 to meet our guide in Hilo at 6. Our guide was Jack Jeffrey, noted wildlife biologist and photographer. We spent the next 12 hours with Jack, who drove us to the Hakalau Forest Reserve and introduced us to the amazing flora and fauna that can be seen there.

I would highly recommend to any birder visiting Hawaii to spend a day touring Hakalau with Jack. It is a truly amazing place, and Jack's knowledge of the forest and avifauna cannot be matched.

And oh, yes.....'I'Iwi !!! They are everywhere in Hakalau and they are fabulous!
