George Habash Poster, Jerusalem
I spotted this poster of George Habash in Jerusalem's Old City, near the New Gate. Habash was founder (1967) of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and served as its Secretary-General until 2000. He died in Amman in January 2008.
Prior to 1993, it was illegal for Palesitnians in the Occupied Territories to belong to any organization affiliated with the PLO, and to display such a poster would probably have resulted in a jail sentence.
Today, it seems, that it is not okay to display any photos of Hamas leaders, although there is certainly some support for Hamas in Palestinian Jerusalem. Palestinian PNA President Mahmoud Abbas' government enjoys some support, but not much popularity, it would seem. His photos are not much in evidence. A friend told me he saw some photos of Hassan Nasrallah around. When I see one I'll be sure to snap a photo.
