Bass Harbor Head Light - B&W
Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Mt. Desert Island, Maine. When I had been on Flickr just a few months, I posted an earlier version of this photo (see below). In moving another batch of photos from my old computer to my newer one this week (I've been making halting efforts to effect the transfer for some months now), I came across this photo and decided to redo it. This crop leave a bit more of the foreground rocks and a bit less sky, but the main difference is that I wanted to try it in black and white. (I tried to bring out more detail in the bright areas of the large cloud left of center, but couldn't. I took this photo in late morning of a bright day in July 2004, when I was still getting used to my first digital camera; although I used a polarizing filter, I did not opt for any exposure bias -- now I would underexpose by at least 2/3 of a stop, probably more in a setting such as this. Ruth Ann and I are hoping to get to Maine this year, for the first time since 2004, so I hope to have the chance to try shooting this lighthouse again.
The Bass Harbor Head Light Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 (#87002273 -- strange that the date, given by the first two digits, doesn't agree with the year givwn in the text of the listing).
I know I say it all the time, but this photo really should be viewed large, in the light box.
